Collaborative Inquiry and Experiential Learning

CIEL

Welcome to the home page of the CIEL European Research Team
CIEL is an European Research Team within the Kaleidoscope Network of Excelence. CIEL's main goal is to integrate existing approaches toward computer supportd collaborative inquiry learning. To this end CIEL brings together the leading institutes in Europe that have developed environments for CIEL and that have done empirical research. CIEL's main objectives are:
  • Design an integrative theoretical approach for collaborative, inquiry and experiential learning (CIEL).
  • Exchange and integration of methodological approaches for the design and evaluation of CIEL environments.
  • Join forces on the development of a common architecture and integrated platform for CIEL.
  • Test this platform in a multi-modal way for use across multiple research laboratories, by means of a common application
  • Consolidate and extend the common framework and platform in future joint research projects

The ambition is to make it a lasting consortium with the potential to grow. The standards that will be developed in CIEL are aimed to set the stage for future integrated development of support for collaborative inquiry and experiential learning. We now have an on-line demonstration application avalaiable that illustrates our ideas of interoperability.

CIEL appearance at the Kaleidoscope Symposium

CIEL made a successful appearance at the Kaleidoscope Symposium in Berlin, Nov 26-27.
Approximately 20 attendees watched the demo of the CIEL sample application and then got engaged in a design activity. There were two groups who came up with ideas about a scenario around food problems (how can we let cows produce healthier milk?) and engineering (design a bridge crossing a river in an old town). Both groups really got engaged and produced very interesting scenarios, using paper representations of tools and emerging learning objects. Apart from useful, the activity was experiences as being fun as well.
