CIEL sample application

Welcome the CIEL demo application
Welcome to the sample application of the CIEL European research team. In this small demo, we provide a proof of concept of  the main CIEL ideas:
  • A shared architecture for supporting interoperatbility between tools.
  • Modeling learning as a creative and productive process.
This has materialized in a demo application in the domain of sampling. You are placed in the role of a forrester who needs to decide whether a part of the forest is ready to be cut for wood production. In order to do so a number of sample trees are cut and measured for size. If the sample is representative for the population of trees and the average tree size is alright, the decision to cut the trees can be taken. The application is meant to allow students to investigate the properties of sampling strategies.

Within the CIEL context it is a demonstration of interoperability as it combines three tools that were not specifically developed for this application:
  • A flash application introducing the concept and allowing the student to produce a first sample
  • Freestyler, used to do statistical analysis and modeling of a sampling procedure
  • Co-Lab, for an automated generation of samples, based on a defined sampling strategy.

Interoperability has been realized by creating a central resource (the CIEL broker) to which all of these tools connect and exchange datasets. A dataset is an example of an emerging learning object. These objects, created by learners can be exchanged through the tools. Using this idea, the three tools can be used to create a consistent pedagogical scenario around the CIEL broker
